The Transformation of the traditional 10 X 10: A Kit-of-Parts.
The UMD Team (University of Maryland, Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design MOME, and the Óbuda University OU) have embraced the option of analyzing and reinvigorating one of the most prevalent, post WWII, traditional house types in Central Europe: the “10 X 10” or “Cubic” house, …transforming it into a new high-performance, flexible and dynamic new variant to become part of a bright new Net-Positive future. Critical to our approach, to only the First Deliverable (D-1), is to modestly revise the sde-19 documentation and expected approach, so that the required “Schematic Design Documents” and the “Project Manual” will be converged into a single narrative and framework for these three simple reasons:
First: while the 10X10 house prototype is largely consistent and repetitive in its almost 1 million built versions across Central Europe, in fact, diverse site and historical circumstances, divergent ownership interests, and likely future prospects vary considerably …so a “one size” fits all (or even most) opportunities would be an unlikely fallacy or inappropriate myth.
Second: Our sde-19 UMD team is most interested in achieving real and lasting value by contributing relevant ideas and tangible or literal opportunities for creating available and affordable options for implementing a series of alternate high-performance ideas, features, and improvements to this remarkable, but too often maligned, tradition. To achieve this, we have come to refer to the need for an effective but dynamic set of options, or “Kit-of-Parts” to serve these typical conditions and new opportunities.
Third: This approach has meant that our particular academic and collaborative interests have taken us in a different direction than would be typical in past Solar Decathlon Competitions. Although we are certainly aiming for and will achieve a singular, and compelling competition entry, we are also focusing on providing a diverse and broadly developed set of options for a potential large market, for transforming these largely single-minded original precedents. What we thought would take full advantage of our unique circumstances and the necessary collaborative/competitive approach, is to develop and refine this Kit-of-Parts through advancing multiple versions (27 to be exact) reflecting the full battery of two design studios (MOME and UMD) design students ”trying out” or testing and developing this Kit-of-Parts approach by working on diverse alternatives (after the Schematic Design submission) to evidence or “prove” the voracity of the approach.
Schedule wise, this process of an initial 27 versions, will take us to late April and our sde-19 workshop, after which we will engage each other in a focused and deliberate effort to negotiate, and distill the divergent approaches into a singular, “best-practices” and most high performing model for the competition. On May 1, we will commence to invest the next two months negotiating and integrating all of the most promising ideas into the singular approach that we will be proposing and developing into Construction Documents for the competition. Moreover, the 27 versions will also be brought forward to the competition by becoming part of the public education and industry sponsored features. For specific innovative technologies we will seek industry and distribution sponsorship and investment for development and featuring in the competition. This will increase the probability that these innovations will make it to market and into actual application.
So, following herein is our converged version of Documents and Manual, as best we could, at this particular point in our collaborative and discovery process.
